In the era of AI-driven productivity, convenience often overshadows caution. The recent exposure of EchoLeak, a zero-click exploit targeting Microsoft 365 Copilot, forces us to confront a growing and silent threat our AI assistants might be too obedient for their own good.
Revealed by AI security firm Aim Security, EchoLeak exploited a vulnerability (CVE-2025–32711) that allowed attackers to subtly hijack the Copilot assistant and extract sensitive user data without a single click. Microsoft has since patched the issue server-side, assuring customers no further action is required. But the implications remain deeply unsettling.
Microsoft 365 Copilot serves as a digital ally, a tool that navigates through emails, documents, and meetings to help users streamline tasks. But it’s precisely this access that made it such a valuable target. EchoLeak didn’t need a user to open an email or click a link. Instead, it quietly inserted malicious instructions into the AI’s path turning it into an unwitting accomplice in data theft.
The attacker’s strategy was disarmingly simple: send an email crafted to appear like internal documentation, say, an HR onboarding guide or a leave policy. Later, when the user casually asks Copilot for help on those topics, the AI fetches that same malicious email and obediently follows the hidden instructions, sending personal or organizational data directly to the attacker’s server.
Even more unsettling, the method bypasses existing security layers including classifiers designed to detect prompt injection, redaction of suspicious content, and strict content security policies. It’s not brute force. It’s fine. The attacker never needs to mention Copilot or AI explicitly. The poison is dressed like help.
While this demonstration focused on Microsoft 365 Copilot, Aim Security was quick to clarify: the technique could easily work across other AI-powered platforms. EchoLeak isn’t a one-off, it’s a blueprint.
The New Face of Social Engineering
Social engineering has always preyed on trust now it’s evolving. The ability to manipulate an AI into betraying its user silently represents a new breed of social engineering: one that doesn’t manipulate the human, but the assistant they trust.
